Warning: Zombies Ahead

Image
The recent spree of pranks in which electronic road signs are hacked to warn motorists about Nazi zombies and raptors has spread. Officials aren't amused.-- Metro.co.uk -- One of the road signs in question The latest breach came on Tuesday during the morning rush hour near Collinsville, Illinois, where hackers changed a sign along southbound Interstate 255 to read, "DAILY LANE CLOSURES DUE TO ZOMBIES." A day earlier in Indiana's Hamilton County, the electronic message on a board in Carmel's construction zone warned drivers of "RAPTORS AHEAD - CAUTION."  And signs in Austin, Texas, recently flashed: "NAZI ZOMBIES! RUN!!!" and "ZOMBIES IN AREA! RUN." Officials in Illinois are concerned the rewritten signs distract motorists from heeding legitimate hazards down the road. The hacked sign on Tuesday originally warned drivers of crews replacing guardrails. 'We understood it was a hoax, but at the same time those boards are there f

King Nut pleads the 5th

Image
In spite of a history of positive salmonella tests, the chief FatCat @ Peanut Corporation of America (AKA King Nut ) last month sent an e-mail to company executives claiming that previous lab testing had "never found any salmonella at all" in the firm's products. Classic denial. In a January 12 e-mail, a copy of which you'll find below, Stewart Parnell, PCA's chief executive, denied that the discovery of salmonella in the kitchen of a Minnesota nursing home was connected to the Virginia-based company, which is now at the center of a national salmonella outbreak that has resulted in nine deaths and the sickening of at least 600 consumers. "We suspect the salmonella could have been introduced by cross-contamination after the tub was opened," Parnell claimed. The e-mail, which was obtained by congressional investigators probing PCA, was sent by Parnell to prepare company managers for press inquiries. "Media have the power to turn this open container

Deadly gun fights in near Texas border

Gun battles between suspected drug gang members and troops have left 21 dead in northern Mexico, police say. Heavily armed soldiers near the Texan border were seen to remove bodies. The violence started when gunmen drove into Villa Ahumada, a farming town in Chihuahua state. They dragged several people - including police officers - out of their homes and killed at least six. Troops then arrived as the scene and 15 people, including one soldier, died in shootouts. Drug-related violence kills thousands every year in Mexico. In a separate incident on Monday, armed men forced their way into a prison in the northern city of Torreon, and killed three inmates. The dead men were being held for kidnapping and murder, and were transferred to the prison less than two hours before the incident. The gunmen also released nine other inmates from the prison before they escaped. Some 40,000 soldiers and police have been deployed since December 2006 against Mexico's drug cartels. -- VIDEO-BBC

Even more Nut-iness...

The FBI raided the Peanut Corporation of America's Blakely, Ga., facility Monday as part of an ongoing criminal investigation into the peanut recall. The company's subsidiary in Plainview, Texas, today announced it, too, would temporarily close its doors after lab tests detected the possible presence of salmonella. developments unfolded this week in a chain of events that has resulted in the removal of 1,845 peanut products from store shelves, following more than 600 illnesses and an estimated eight deaths linked to bad peanuts.

Illinois leads the nation in gang members

Daily Herald | Officials unveil Lake County's most-wanted gang members "Illinois leads the nation in per capita gang members, fueled in part by the growth of suburban street gangs," Kirk said. "As violent gangs are pushed out of Chicago, they are relocating to the northern suburbs." They asked the public to call the sheriff's office with information they have about people on the list, and stressed public cooperation is critical. Since it originated last year, the most wanted list has led to the arrest of 17 fugitives. It is repopulated after each time a suspect is apprehended. They asked the public to call the sheriff's office with information they have about people on the list, and stressed public cooperation is critical. Gang members should be prepared to get what they give, Lake County Sheriff Mark Curran said Monday. As part of releasing an updated list of the "worst of the worst" gang members in the county, including two wanted for m

End of Time...in unix

"Over at Linux Magazine Online, Jon maddog Hall writes that on Friday the 13th, 2009 at 11:31:30pm UTC UNIX time will reach 1,234,567,890 . This will be Friday, February 13th at 1831 and 30 seconds EST. Matias Palomec has a perl script you an use to see what time that will be for you: perl -e 'print scalar localtime(1234567890),"\n";' Now, while this is not the UNIX epoch, Alan Cox does assure us that Linux is now working on 64-bit time, and the UNIX epoch 'roll-over' would happen about the time that the sun burnt out."

Record Store Day

Image
any time you get to quote a Rock_God- Do It!  to wit: Tad Doyle ( TAD ) “Independent record stores are where I find the new music that in many cases is the most vital and cutting edge music out there. As a guy who has had experience trying to get his music heard; these places are so valuable to artists and music fans alike. The synergy is incredible because it is where lives are changed and where artist meets listener. As a kid, the independent record store was so important because I was able to find things that I really cared about and discovered music that mattered to me on a personal level: records and music that set my imagination and spirit soaring. It is that important. It is life!”

... of Herschel's mirror  -- source -- It is enchanting, spectacular and - at 3.5m in diameter - it will soon become the biggest telescope mirror in space, surpassing that of Hubble. The great 18th Century astronomer William Herschel would have been astonished by the silver sensation that now bears his name. The European Space Agency (Esa) is certainly very proud of its new observatory. It has been working on the venture for more than 20 years. "The mirror is an enormous piece of hardware," enthused Thomas Passvogel, Esa's programme manager on the Herschel space observatory. "It's a ceramic mirror; it's the biggest piece ever made from silicon carbide. It's very hard but much, much lighter than glass and the performance is excellent." This week, the finished observatory will be flown to Europe's Kourou spaceport in South America. There, it will be bolted to an Ariane rocket and hurled into orbit. The design keeps Hersch

here is a lil history for you kids out there. and a day planner for the for security minded:

Putin: 2 years on...

remarks made by Mr. Putin @ the Speech at the 43rd Munich Conference on Security Policy 02/10/2007: (The speech was held in Russian. Find the English excerpts translation below.) " I am truly grateful to be invited to such a representative conference that has assembled politicians, military officials, entrepreneurs and experts from more than 40 nations. This conference’s structure allows me to avoid excessive politeness and the need to speak in roundabout, pleasant but empty diplomatic terms. This conference’s format will allow me to say what I really think about international security problems. And if my comments seem unduly polemical, pointed or inexact to our colleagues, then I would ask you not to get angry with me. After all, this is only a conference. And I hope that after the first two or three minutes of my speech Mr Teltschik will not turn on the red light over there. Therefore. It is well known that international security comprises much more than issues relating to

"If they all knew..."

01/06/2009: "If they all knew..." § 371. Conspiracy to commit offense or to defraud United States this is treason...? If two or more persons conspire either to commit any offense against the United States, or to defraud the United States, or any agency thereof in any manner or for any purpose, and one or more of such persons do any act to effect the object of the conspiracy, each shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than five years, or both. If, however, the offense, the commission of which is the object of the conspiracy, is a misdemeanor only, the punishment for such conspiracy shall not exceed the maximum punishment provided for such misdemeanor. why the hell didn't they do something?! Now that we have intelligence experts, the military community, present and former administration, a Senator, and the media saying that they all knew the evidence was bullshit. ol' crazy Dick

the guy i love most to hate- former vice president Dick Chinstrap Cheney tells Politico that there is a “high probability” of a terrorist attack involving “a nuclear weapon or a biological agent of some kind” and that the current administration is “more concerned about reading the rights to an Al Qaeda terrorist than they are with protecting the United States. ...” Of course the last time Cheney warned us about a likely WMD attack he turned out to be a goofball with a $3 trillion quagmire to sell. Politico : “When we get people who are more concerned about reading the rights to an Al Qaeda terrorist than they are with protecting the United States against people who are absolutely committed to do anything they can to kill Americans, then I worry,” Cheney said. Protecting the country’s security is “a tough, mean, dirty, nasty business,” he said. “These are evil people. And we’re not going to win this fight by turning the other cheek.” We all know Ol' Dick is cutesy with the wordp

fishermen trapped on slab

Media reports put the number of those rescued - thought to be mostly fishermen - at between 100 and 145. Fishermen say ice on Lake Erie has been particularly thick this winter, luring more people on than usual. The ice started to crack when temperatures rose above freezing this weekend and strong gusts of wind pushed on the ice, he told AP. The slab of ice that broke off and floated away was about eight miles (13 km) wide, the Coast Guard said. It is thought the anglers had used wooden pallets to make a temporary bridge across a crack to get further out on the lake, leaving them stranded when the ice shifted and the planks fell in the water. i used to live in Ohio (albeit, shortly) and i imagine a scene more like lemmings than people...

Mo Peanut Blues

we all found out that mr peanut rides dirty. now they deliberately shipped some tainted product: Federal health officials say the Georgia peanut plant at the center of the salmonella outbreak knowingly shipped tainted products. Friday, the FDA said the company sent out peanut butter, chopped peanuts and peanut meal that had tested positive even before it got back any negative findings. Peanut Corp. denies any wrongdoing. The government has opened a criminal investigation. maybe the time has come to hold corparations accountable for the actions of its various organs...hmmmmm indeed. UPDATE: Sat morn -" further investigation showed that the company shipped some of the lots before the second tests were completed. Other lots were shipped without testing, and in some cases, no second test was performed even after the first was positive. "  - source/video -

My Guide to GID-DIY-style Government

being from illinois, i got the " FEVER ". impeachment fever that is. instead of waiting for your favourite politiko to get indicted -- DIY! i have found an online resource to help you get the ball rollin guys! "Jefferson's Manual" is an interpretive guide to parliamentary procedure, and is included (along with the Constitution) in the bound volumes of the Rules of the House of Representatives. It is ratified by each congress (including the current one), and has been updated continuously through the history of our democracy. The section covering impeachment lists the acceptable vehicles for bringing impeachment motions to the floor of the House. the House Judiciary Committee can put together the Articles of Impeachment, someone must initiate the impeachment procedure. Most often, this occurs when members of the House pass a resolution. Another method outl

Withnail & I fan to save Crow Crag

A fan of the classic film Withnail & I is leading a campaign to buy a ramshackle cottage featured in the movie. Bidders including Kate Moss when it is auctioned next week. Others are gathering cash pledges online and hopes to establish a charitable trust to buy the property which featured as Crow Crag. If you have seen the movie you know the cozy spot and the emotion it evokes. My inner demented hermit wishes it had the cash to acquire this property for my own decadent purposes. I don't know who is more evil though, to wit: She is hoping to transform it into a tourist attraction.

Consequences of the Whiskey Rebellion

This marked the first time under the new United States Constitution that the federal government used military force to exert authority over the nation's citizens. It was also one of only two times that a sitting President personally commanded the military in the field; the other was after President James Madison fled the British occupation of Washington, D.C. during the War of 1812 . The military suppression of the Whiskey Rebellion set a precedent that U.S. citizens who wished to change the law had to do so peacefully through constitutional means; otherwise, the government would meet any threats to disturb the status quo with force. The suppression of the Whiskey Rebellion also had the unintended consequences of encouraging small whiskey producers in Kentucky and Tennessee , which remained outside the sphere of Federal control for many more years. In these frontier areas, they also found good corn-growing country as well as limestone -filtered water and therefore began makin

"Dark Flow" Outside Observable Universe

"NASA astrophysicists have discovered what they claim is something outside the observable universe exerting an effect on the observable. The material is pulling clusters of galaxies towards a region of space known not to contain sufficient matter to create the effect. They can only speculate on what the material is and how space might differ there: 'In these regions, space-time might be very different, and likely doesn't contain stars and galaxies (which only formed because of the particular density pattern of mass in our bubble). It could include giant, massive structures much larger than anything in our own observable universe. These structures are what researchers suspect are tugging on the galaxy clusters, causing the dark flow.'"

Goats Had Agricultural Tags, But Unknown Where They Came From First it was coyotes . Then there was a cougar . Now it's goats. Two goats were found wandering near Montrose Harbor Sunday night, police said. The goats, which both had agricultural tags on them, were found wandering near Lake Shore Drive at Montrose Harbor, according to a Town Hall District police lieutenant. Responding Town Hall District police officers placed the goats into the care of Animal Care & Control and it was not immediately known where the goats came, though the lieutenant said it was possible they had come from the Lincoln Park Zoo or from a farm.

FBI search related to '82 Tylenol killings

The Boston office of the FBI is conducting a search the home of James William Lewis, a man convicted of extortion in connection with the 1982 Tylenol killings, sources said today. The search was being conducted at his home in Cambridge, Mass., the sources said, but Lewis was not in custody. The Boston FBI would only confirm they were involved in a search "related to an ongoing criminal investigation," said spokesperson Gail Marcinkiewicz. Seven people in the Chicago area died after ingesting Tylenol capsules that had been laced with cyanide. No one ever has been arrested and charged with murder, but the FBI has continued to take tips. Lewis was convicted of trying to extort $1 million from the manufacturer of Tylenol after the killings.

welcome to jonestown How very much I've tried my best to give you a good life. But in spite of all of my trying a handful of our people, with their lies, have made our lives impossible. There's no way to detach ourselves from what's happened today. Not only are we in a compound situation, not only are there those who have left and committed the betrayal of the century, some have stolen children from others, and they are in pursuit right now to kill them because they stole their children. And we are sitting here waiting on a powder keg. I don't think it is what we want to do with our babies--I don't think that's what we had in mind to do with our babies. It is said by the greatest of prophets from time immemorial: "No man may take my life from me; I lay my life down." So to sit here and wait for the catastrophe that's going to happen on that airplane--it's going to be a catastrophe. It almost happened here. Almost happened when t

Strings that blow

Talking about Strings that blow bubbles in the cosmos. (research on galaxy formation) | Article from Science News Strings that blow bubbles in the cosmos How the galaxies and clusters of galaxies formed in a universe where matter was smoothly and homogeneously distributed in the beginning is one of the great questions of cosmology. Cosmic strings, which are topological defects in the structure of space, are the latest things to be suggested as triggers of galaxy formation. One recent theory proposes that the strong gravitational forces exerted by the strings gather matter around them and so start galaxy formation (SN: 5/12/84, p.294). A newer theory, by Jeremiah P. Ostriker, Christopher Thompson and Edward Witten of Princeton (N.J.) University, proposes just the opposite. ...
